The supply chain services provider, The Descartes Systems Group Inc., has launched its new ‘Descartes RFID Pilot’ program, which aims to help client companies separate the hype from the reality of RFID by measuring both costs and business benefits across the supply chain.
Drawing upon its experience in live RFID field tests, and close working relationships with leading RFID hardware vendors, Descartes’ RFID Pilot program allows companies to measure the impact of RFID on order fulfilment quality, cycle times, and inventory and asset productivity – both within their own company and (optionally) with partners across their extended supply chain.
“No two businesses are exactly alike, and that’s why the value of RFID can differ dramatically by company and industry,” explained Manuel Pietra, Descartes’ CEO and president. “Only by monitoring and measuring the technology through a real slice of the supply chain can companies truly understand the benefits RFID could provide.”
Standards based
The RFID Pilot program can be tailored to meet the specific needs of a variety of industries due to the flexibility of Descartes’ standards-based Logistics Network Operating System. The system can be used to integrate RFID with business documents such as purchase orders and advance shipment notices, and also with GPS vehicle tracking technology to provide real-time supply chain monitoring.
“We are seeing demand for RFID solutions from several of our customers throughout our target industries,” said Pietra. The program features site evaluation and laboratory testing of RFID equipment; implementation of RFID equipment through part of the supply chain; live monitoring of RFID-enabled orders, inventory and assets during the field test period; measurement of business process improvements; assessment of RFID infrastructure and tag costs; and rollout recommendations.
