Adelaide, a coastal city located in the South Australia, has initiated the roll out of a smart card system across the local transport network, according to AdelaideNow.
Transport Services has equipped the first tram, the 103, with a Metrocard machine which will enable commuters to validate their current magnetic tickets and eventually the Metrocard when it comes into operation next year.
Single and day trip tickets will remain in the current magnetic ticket form, while multi-trip tickets will be phased out and replaced with Metrocards. About 250 commuters have already participated in the trial of the new Metrocard system and the number of participants will be doubled in coming months, said Chloe Fox, minister for transport services.
Adelaide plans to install the Metrocard machines at the city’s remaining 18 public trams later this year. The smart card system is expected to be fully operational in 2013.
