Accenture, a management and consulting firm, along with Sagem Defense Securite, a defense technology developer, have won a contract to develop the European Commission’s Biometric Matching System which is intended to integrate all the European Union identity programs. It also would further the elimination of physical borders among the 29 European countries involved.
Under the contract, Accenture will be managing the project while Sagem will be supplying the necessary software for the system; both companies will be sharing the responsibilities for analysis, design, testing, and maintenance.
Eventually, the biometric system will authenticate biometric information found on visas, existing biometric systems, and law enforcement agency systems. Additionally, the design of the new system is being left open to further additions and changes as necessary in the future.
