Bulgaria begins issuance of biometric passports

Bulgaria’s government has begun to issue biometric passports following the installation of the processing equipment necessary for collecting biometric data with the passport application at all planned locations, according to a Novinite article.
The new Bulgarian passports will now contain data on a citizen’s fingerprints which can be checked to better authenticate their identity.
Bulgarians applying for the new passport will see a 33% hike in fees associated with the application to help the government cover the additional costs incurred from introducing the new technology. In addition to having access to the new passports in Bulgaria, many of the country’s consulates and embassies around the world have also installed the equipment necessary for processing the applications.
