NBS Technologies, a provider of smart card personalization hardware and software solutions, today announced that the Canadian Intellectual Property Office has issued the company a patent for the personalization of EMV cards in client/server based environments.
Patent #2331494, entitled “Smart Card Personalization in a Multistation Environment,” details the personalization of ID or payment smart cards on a multitude of devices that are connected to a server PC responsible for data preparation and cryptographic operations.
According to NBS, the company’s smart card personalization environment enables card issuers to offer multiple personalization options on several devices without the need for spending funds on increased cryptographic devices or on supporting multiple development environments, thereby reducing the total cost of ownership of a card producer’s smart card personalization process.
NBS says the system’s architecture also boosts security, as all data preparation, including confidential operations, takes place in a secure environment at the server.
This technology is also the basis for NBS’s Xpressi software, an instant card issuance solution used for issuing contact or contactless credit and debit smart cards.
