The government is launching new India drivers licenses and vehicle registration cards, which for the first time, makes uniform the ID documents nationwide. Format and design will be standardized, and all cards will have contact and contactless technologies.
The contact and NFC contactless functionality, along with an on board QR code, provide multiple ways for police to access online records related to the individual or vehicle. New licenses will contain blood type and organ donation details.
More than 32,000 new India drivers licenses are issued every day in India and over 43,000 vehicles are registered every day, according to a report from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The new IDs will be provided for all new and renewal licenses and for new and re-registration of vehicles.
Nationwide rollout is expected by July 2019.
According to a Financial Express article, the government will not require citizens to link the new licenses or vehicle registration cards to national digital identity program known as Aadhaar.
