Commuters in Jamaica use smart cards for travel

As the new Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre opens in Jamaica, officials are encouraging residents to purchase Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) smart cards. By obtaining a smart card, commuters can avoid waiting in line to buy bus tickets. The cards can also be personalized with contact information to protect against loss or theft. Since the start of the smart card system in 2004, approximately 75,000 cards have been issued (approx. 6% usage). The cards are available in more than 12 high schools and over 30 outlets in Kingston, including all post offices.
