CPI Card Group and INSIDE Contactless have introduced a next-generation tag that enables mobile devices to make MasterCard PayPass and Discover Zip contactless payments.
The stickers, which are manufactured by CPI and based on INSIDE’s MicroPass 4003 contactless payment processor, contain all the functionality of traditional MasterCard PayPass and Discover Zip credit, debit or prepaid debit cards.
According to Charles Walton, executive vice president for INSIDE Contactless, “These stickers have the potential to transform the mobile payment market in the U.S. by enabling anyone to make PayPass payments with their mobile phone, thus setting the stage to ultimately achieve fully integrated NFC payment and other applications.”
CPI says their new lab-certified sticker features an advanced adhesive backing that not only adheres to mobile phones better, but also allows the sticker to be removed and reapplied multiple times without losing its grip.
The stickers also feature a shielding design that improves performance by protecting the chip and antenna inside the sticker from interference that might be caused by a mobile phone’s signals and metallic materials.
CPI’s Zip stickers have already been tested during a pilot conducted by Discover with its more than 700 employees at the company’s Riverwoods, Ill. and Salt Lake City facilities. The stickers were fully enabled for use at any of the more than 80,000 merchant locations that currently accept Discover Zip in the U.S.
