That the RFID-infused electronic passports can be read from as few as 30 feet way will spark a new wave of concerns and debates just as the United States is about to start issuing these documents by the thousands.
For those who haven’t been following the news, the federal government will soon offer passport cards equipped with electronic data chips to U.S. citizens who travel frequently between the United States and Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean (Washington Post .)
Today’s Post article served as a gentle reminder of the good vs. bad RFID debate, noting that “the cards can be read wirelessly from 20 feet, offering convenience to travelers but raising security and privacy concerns about the possibility of data being intercepted.”
