The European FlexSmell project is exploring packing materials that can be printed with embedded sensors and RFID antennas to monitor quality during transit.
The project, which began earlier in 2010, combines organic and inorganic sensing technologies with integrated RFID, to make food packaging that gathers data on its contents and changes the way food safety is assessed.
Chemical and pressure sensors will gather data on the changing conditions within the food packaging, including impact on the packaging during transit. This information can then be transmitted to operatives via RFID.
It will allow food packers and handlers to monitor products in transit for freshness and damage.
Italian packaging firm Carton Pack and German sensor producer BoTest have partnered for when the project is completed.
