Facebook buys NFC start-up Tagtile

Facebook has acquired Tagtile, a San Francisco based start-up that offers an NFC-enabled mobile marketing and loyalty rewards service for small businesses and merchants.
Purchased for an undisclosed sum, Tagtile provides merchants with POS hardware, i.e. the Tagtile Cube, that customers can tap with their NFC phone to earn rewards points. Merchants can also use Tagtile to track their customer base and send customized offers directly to users’ phones.
According to Forbes, the acquisition fits nicely with Facebook’s own recently launched offers service, which enables businesses to post offers and discounts on their Facebook pages. The addition of Tagtile could mean that Facebook is looking to integrate NFC into its existing service.
Tagtile added that its service will continue to operate “as is” throughout the acquisition.
