Nashville-based Redpepper ad agency is piloting a system that uses facial recognition technology to encourage consumers to check in at local businesses with their social media accounts.
As reported on Wired, the system, called Facedeals, relies on cameras loaded with facial recognition software that are mounted at businesses. The cameras get permission to recognize a consumer’s face, then checks the user into the location. Upon tying the user to an account, the system can send the user a customized deal via smartphone.
The system works through Facedeals’ Facebook app, which verifies a user’s photo tags and maps the account holder’s facial biometric data. The cameras use open source technology, a power source and a WiFi connection.
