Freda, IKEA shipments tracked with RFID

Lithuanian furniture manufacturer, Freda, has begun employing RFID technology to track furniture shipped and destined for Sweden’s global retail outlet IKEA, reports The Baltic Times.
The system consists of EPC Gen 2 passive RFID tags, a portal reader at each loading dock, and a forklift with an on-board computer that transmits order updates. As forklifts pass through RFID portals, a reader captures the tag ID number and furniture description. It then compares it against the original order to ensure the correct items are being placed into the truck.
The new system enables management to track when items are produced and shipped out and to identify when a specific type of product is low in inventory and needs to be manufactured.
The company ships an average of 10,000 pallets loaded with furniture every month, with 800 items loaded onto a total of 15 to 20 trucks on any given day.
