The Ghana Electoral Commission (EC) Chairman, Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, announced that biometric registration of Ghanaian citizens registered to vote will begin on March 24 and is expected to finish on May 5, according to a Ghana Business News article.
To collect the necessary data from the voter’s in Ghana, the commission has purchased 7,000 biometric registration kits to collect biometric data at the 23,000 poling locations in the country.
While the commission is looking forward to the eventual implementation of the biometric data for use in authentication of voters’ identities during elections, it acknowledges that some issues could arise. Voters will only be able to vote at the location that they were registered and the commission also is working to ensure that disabled citizens and others who will need assistance in voting to be able to cast their ballots.
