An e-health smart card is in the works and scheduled to be implemented in Australia by Victoria’s Department of Health. The card, HealthSMART, is meant to monitor and secure access to Victorian public health sector applications with two factor authentication technology.
The system will consist of a smart card management system including card printers, contact smart card readers, middleware for network authentication, and an application for performing certificate and PIN management.
The cards themselves are being released in three phases, according to a NetworkWorld report. They expect issue 5000 cards in year one, 30,000 in year two and 50,000 in year three for a total of 85,000 cards.
