HID releases biometric, contactless reader
HID Global announced that it has integrated the company’s Lumidigm biometrics technology with its OMNIKEY contactless smart card readers to simplify identity validation for citizen ID and many financial, health care and other commercial applications.
With the Lumidigm V-Series V371 fingerprint reader, program administrators can verify users’ identities by having them present a card, fingerprint or both to the reader. The solution is designed to streamline enrollment and transactions while preventing the use of fake fingerprints.
Originally designed for a national citizen ID program, the V371 can be used for any identity verification application where individuals enroll their fingerprint information onto a contactless card. Validation is accomplished by matching the individual’s fingerprint with his or her biometric data that was written to the card during enrollment.
Applications include:
- Citizen ID: Provides a simple way to prove the identity of citizens when crossing borders, voting, and receiving financial, health care and other government benefits through public distribution programs. A biometric national ID card is all that is required to validate a trusted identity, replacing the old process of using an ID book, passport and/or utility bills.
- Health care services: Includes validating identity for patient registration, e-prescribing and benefit eligibility.
- Financial services and commercial transactions: Solves challenges of authenticating high-value financial services transactions and account access. It also can be used for gym membership, phone SIM card registration, customer loyalty programs and more, enabling businesses to validate a person’s true identity prior to offering a service.

Usher is FIDO certified
MicroStrategy Inc., a provider of enterprise software platforms, announced that Usher, its enterprise security solution designed to replace passwords and keycards, has been certified by The FIDO Alliance. Usher has passed a series of tests that measure compliance with the FIDO Universal Authentication Framework (UAF) and confirm interoperability with other FIDO Certified products and services that support FIDO 1.0 specifications.
The FIDO Alliance, a coalition of vendors that includes Microsoft, Google, Intel, Lenovo, RSA, Samsung, Qualcomm, and various credit card companies, has developed open specifications for strong authentication. FIDO certification is performed using a set of test tools developed by the FIDO Alliance, followed by participation in a proctored interoperability event. The current FIDO Certified testing complements the previous FIDO Ready program. With this accomplishment, MicroStrategy joins a growing list of technology and financial services providers that have passed FIDO UAF certification.
New print module from Entrust Datacard
Entrust Datacard announced the release of the Datacard Artista VHD Retransfer Color Printing module GEN 2. Designed to work in line with the Datacard MX Series card issuance systems, this second generation inline printer module offers on-demand, 600 dpi full-color, edge-to-edge card printing for card and credential programs in the financial, government, retail, loyalty, and health care markets.
On-demand color card printing can eliminate the need to preprint cards — a process that can consume weeks of production time. With this module, issuers can utilize blank white card stock and rapidly produce an entire run of individually distinct cards. This enables cost and timesavings, and gives issuers design flexibility for printing cards.
Building on the legacy of innovation of the first-generation Artista VHD module, the GEN 2 module provides users with enhanced capabilities, including:
New cleaning capabilities – understanding the unpredictable conditions and 24/7 demands of a high-volume card production environment, the Artista VHD GEN 2 module includes a variety of new cleaning capabilities such as beginning and end card cleaners, an integrated cleaning ribbon and a new baffle that protects the printing station from environmental dust and particulates.
Precision printing and high quality color, with on-demand flexibility – the Artista VHD GEN 2 module allows card issuers to print cards on demand with detailed designs and fine-line characters, as well as edge-to-edge designs, which saves time and eliminates the need to maintain an inventory of pre-printed cards.
Enhanced air flow system with HEPA filtration — keeps dust away from the precision printing head, and ultimately enables a high quality output and card personalization.
