Hewlett Packard has signed a contract in China to assist Hong Kong Public Libraries in the delivery and support of a new integrated library system.
Under the terms of the 10-year agreement HP scheduled a pilot implementation of Fastrac, an RFID technology from VTLS, Inc., to enable automated management of book borrowing rights.
Fastrac features RFID tags with built-in rewritable information storage and security that can be applied to library materials, including books, CDs, DVDs, and VHS.
Fastrac also provides automatic sorting that distributes materials to multiple bins, areas, or even floors for re-shelving, thereby reducing “to-shelf” periods.
