IIT-Kanpur develops new multi-modal system

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has developed a multi-modal biometrics system capable of capturing and authenticating via face, iris, ear, palm and fingerprint, according to a Rediff Business article.
Beyond the possibility for various commercial uses of the system, IITK is also pushing for their prototype to be considered for use in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act’s Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Public Distribution System schemes wherein citizens of India will receive an identification number that corresponds with certain biometric traits yet to be decided on.
The researchers making this push expect that utilizing a system such as theirs for such projects could provide a smoother transaction of information than other existing technologies once such a system is in place.
