Indian Government Likely to Use Biometrics to Avoid Duplicate PAN cards

Due to problems with the current Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards, the Indian government will likely introduce biometric ID cards to all citizens. Current problems include citizens obtaining multiple PAN cards and cards issued to non-existent people. By switching to a biometric card, the government is hoping to eliminate the ability for citizens to obtain a duplicate PAN card. The Ministry of Finance has met with leading biometric providers and is considering its options.
