The Indonesian Immigration Office has made official plans to launch e-passports with enhanced security features, according to a FutureGov report. Immigration officials have prepared nearly 10,000 e-passports to be issued in its initial trial phase. With this announcement Indonesia joins Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand as Southeast Asian countries that have begun issuing e-passports.
A 48-page e-passport will set travelers back roughly $74 USD, and the 24-page e-passport approximately $46 USD. Each e-passport will have an electronic chip embedded inside for accurate identification processing and increased security of immigration documents.
The use of e-passports is mandatory by 2015 for member countries of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Read the full story here.
