Jakarta defers e-ID enrollment deadline again

While the Jakarta Population and Civil Registry Office had planned to register all of the city’s citizens in its e-ID program by the end of April, it has moved that deadline for a second time due to people still waiting for their identification cards, reports the Jakarta Globe.
The Population and Civil Registry Office has pushed the deadline to October in order to accommodate those who moved to the city over a year ago but hadn’t yet registered as residents. Those people must provide a letter of authentication from heads of neighborhoods and urban ward units along with their registration application.
Another bug in the system is the fact that although the Home Affairs Ministry has processed 1.37 million e-KTPs, they haven’t been distributed because they don’t yet have the smart card readers for all the urban wards and districts. These readers are necessary to activate the holograms on the cards.
Only 73% of the city’s population eligible to have an e-KTP have registered for the cards.
