South Korea’s National Tax Service (NTS) will use RFID tags to sniff out counterfeit liquor bottles in 1,045 bars and 150 liquor wholesalers Seoul’s Gangnam district, according to The Chosun Ilbo.
Some popular targets for counterfeiters include Diageo Korea’s 12- and 17-year-old Windsor whiskey, Pernod Ricard Korea’s 12- and 17-year-old Imperial whiskey, and Lotte Chilsung Beverages’ 12- and 17-year-old Scotch Blue whiskey. Legitimate bottles will contain an RFID tag detailing the production, delivery and distribution process.
The NTS hopes that the RFID system, which it plans to spread through all of Seoul next year, will block illegal transactions and tax evasion among domestic whiskey dealers.
