South Korean telecom giant KT Corp. and Samsung Electronics announced that they will commercially launch a new NFC-enabled handset this month capable of making contactless payments.
The new Samsung SHW-A170K will operate on an NFC compatible USIM, allowing users to make everyday purchases, open electronic locks, buy and store event tickets, read NFC tags and more.
According to KT, the company has been working with South Korean retailers, including Lotte Shopping Co., to provide payment terminals at local stores to support the smart phone’s launch.
KT and Samsung also proclaimed plans to roll out more NFC handsets in the future, which KT predicts will make up 47% of mobile phone purchases by 2015.
