LaunchKey has released a facial scan biometric for supported iOS and Android devices. It works using the device’s own camera. Even better, this form of authentication can be used with any LaunchKey supported system.
The big news here is that WordPress users who have the LaunchKey plugin can now access the site using a facial recognition biometric on their mobile device.
All you need is the LaunchKey mobile app, available through the App Store and Google Play. Once the facial scan is enabled through the control panel, users are prompted to take ten pictures of their face that will map their unique features.
“While biometric facial recognition is new to LaunchKey, we don’t necessarily recommend any factor of authentication over another as we believe in utilizing a multi-factor approach,” says Geoff Sanders, cofounder and CEO of LaunchKey. “We leave it up to the end user to determine what level of security is appropriate for them, while giving applications the ability to force certain authentication factors from the API side.”
LaunchKey bills itself as the first authentication platform made for the post-password era and the Internet of Everything. Sanders says all of the biometric data that’s collected is encrypted and lives only on the user’s mobile device.
“LaunchKey is the first authentication solution to shift the entire layer of authentication 100% out-of-band,” Sanders says. “This decentralized mobile approach makes LaunchKey immune to many of the common attack vectors passwords are vulnerable to (man-in-the-middle attacks, etc.) because all of the authentication happens on an end user’s mobile device, not on the website or application requesting the authentication.”
