The Penang Public Library has recently become Malaysia’s first library to implement an RFID system compliant to the EPC Global Gen2 standard.
The system, developed by Smartag Solutions, uses UPM Raflatac’s DogBone RFID tags to track more than 500,000 copies of reading material available to the library’s 800,000 users.
The revamped library features an automated RFID self-check-in/out station that enables library patrons to manage their own transactions, review their account status and renew materials in real time. At check out the patron simply places the material on the RFID reader and within seconds the user information is updated in the library system and the material is coded as borrowed.
Additionally, the system features an anti-theft UHF reader with a range of 7 meters that sounds an alarm when it detects tagged books exiting the building that haven’t been coded as borrowed.
