Banamex Citibank Calls on VeriFone for First Contactless Payment System Deployed in Latin America
SAN JOSE, CA – March 13, 2007 – VeriFone Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: PAY) announced today that Banamex has deployed the VeriFone MX870 multi-media payment platform to accept contactless and traditional bank cards at all McDonald’s Mexico restaurants in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.
Monterrey is the first city in Latin America to use the MasterCard PayPass contactless card. Banamex Citibank has issued 10,000 contactless cards and selected VeriFone to supply the MX870 multi-media payment system with contactless capabilities to speed up payment at McDonald’s cash registers while also delivering menu and promotional information to consumers.
“Banamex and McDonald’s Mexico have utilized VeriFone’s MX870 as both payment platform and content delivery system to inform customers and speed up payment at the counter,” said William Atkinson, VeriFone executive vice president, Payment Systems. “This demonstrates the enhanced consumer experience of our payment solutions.”
Customers at McDonald’s are presented with video on menu items, information on their order, and can use their preferred payment card all on one system provided by VeriFone.
“The complete payment process is faster and mistakes are reduced by using the MX870, which allows our customers to view their order before it is transmitted to the kitchen and before they have made payment,” said German Gudino, Marketing Director for McDonald’s Mexico and Central America.
In addition, customers using contactless cards for payments under 250 pesos (US$25) do not have to sign payment slips, making the payment process even faster. “VeriFone’s MX870 will be the basis of a nationwide rollout of contactless payment at McDonald’s Mexico restaurants,” said Marco Antonio Giardiello Castillo, Country Business Head for Banamex’s Merchant Services and Remote Banking. “We are working with McDonald’s and VeriFone to provide the most up-to-date payment system available in Latin America.”
The PCI PED-approved MX870 is the flagship of the MX Solutions product family and combines vibrant color, full-motion video, and digital sound with highly secure payment and point-of-service capabilities into a single system. It is a powerful new way to broadcast multimedia advertising and other promotional or informational content directly to customers.
