Mine operators worldwide are making use of RFID in a number of different applications to increase safety. One recent example comes from South Africa, where the Sishen Iron Ore mine makes use of a Wireless Event Management System (WEMS) designed by Tronimex Data Technologies and Pinkmatter Solutions.
A system was needed to ensure that the mine complied with government safety acts pertaining to moving machinery. So while in the mine, all personnel wear an active RFID badge. Each time a worker starts a piece of machinery, the WEMS system scans the badge to check that the operator has the required qualifications and up-to-date licenses to operate the equipment.
The system components were designed with the rugged environment of the mine in mind, which also make them suitable for use in other harsh manufacturing conditions.
