Motorola Inc. has received a contract to supply RFID solutions for Lufthansa Technik AG, a provider of aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul services. The Lufthansa Technik Logistik business will use Motorola’s technology to track aircraft components in its maintenance facilities.
According to the deal, Lufthansa Technik will attach EPC UHF tags to documents that accompany aircraft parts, enabling the company to track their movement and deployment using hand-held and stationary RFID readers supplied by Motorola. This is expected to reduce or eliminate the need for manual data entry, avoid delivery errors and accelerate the repair process.
Martin Stempelmann, project head at Lufthansa Technik, said that with the use of the new RFID solution the company will be able to release aircraft back to its clients faster but without compromising safety. The aviation company decided to implement the Motorola RFID solutions in all of its facilities in Germany after a successful trial at its maintenance center in Hamburg.
