In an effort to curb mishandling of narcotics prescriptions that see the pills being sold on the street to addicts, the Florida state legislators are sponsoring legislartion that will attempt to regulate “doctor shopping,” or the act of moving from doctor to doctor to gain multiple prescriptions for one condition or find a doctor that will prescribe without a preexisting condition.
Other states have attempted to put systems in place to curb this behavior, but have not reported much success. Florida, however, plans to succeed where others have failed by introducing biometrics into the system.
One of the biometric developers that the state is looking at is BioScriptRX as they already have a system that would serve the needs of the bill. Additionally, BioScriptRX already sees some use in various Florida pharmacies. If the bill is passed into a law, Florida will be the first state in the U.S. to have such a law curbing doctor shopping via a biometric system on the books.
