NFC Forum, Bluetooth group update pairing paper
The NFC Forum and the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, a trade association responsible for the development, promotion and protection of Bluetooth technology, announced the publication of an updated version of the Bluetooth Secure Simple Pairing Using NFC Application Document.
The document provides developers with examples of how to implement Bluetooth Secure Simple Pairing using NFC to take maximum advantage of both technologies when they are present in the same device.
The new version has been expanded to include descriptions of how to use NFC for fast and easy Bluetooth low energy out-of-band pairing, a key capability of Bluetooth Smart.
Bluetooth Secure Simple Pairing Using NFC was first published in 2011 by the two organizations. Late last year, the NFC Forum and Bluetooth SIG signed an official liaison agreement that calls for the two associations to collaborate on projects and to evaluate opportunities to enhance interoperability and the user experience of devices that use their technologies.
AOptix rebrands as Terrain Biometrics
AOptix Technologies announced the creation of Terrain Biometrics, a division dedicated to bringing identity verification solutions to customers. Terrain Biometrics retains all the core product development, sales, and marketing team that was formerly referred to as the AOptix Identity Solutions business unit, but will operate as a division of AOptix in order to better focus on the biometrics market.
AOptix Identity Solutions was launched formally within AOptix in 2007, leveraging core Adaptive Optics technology to enable iris recognition in challenging real world environments through a combination of speed, accuracy, and a high degree of automation.
Terrain Biometrics carries forward thefootprint of InSight iris and face recognition systems, which processes tens of millions of travelers in aviation and immigration applications, as well as its Stratus smartphone-based mobile biometric platform. Currently under a $3 million funded development effort through U.S. Department of Defense, the company is actively working on its next generation mobile device, which will deliver advanced fingerprint, face, iris and voice biometrics in a compact form factor.
GlobalPlatform publishes ISO framework
GlobalPlatform has published an ISO framework, which defines how to implement GlobalPlatform’s Specifications in accordance with the latest version of standards from the International Organization for Standardization. The framework will be of particular benefit to governments deploying GlobalPlatform compliant secure ID documents.
The document, titled: ‘GlobalPlatform Card Technology Card Specification – ISO Framework’ proposes a framework based on the GlobalPlatform Card Specification combining the latest ISO standards – ISO/IEC 7816-13, ISO/IEC 7816-4 and ISO/IEC 24727-2. The guidelines enable card manufacturers, service providers and application developers to conform to ISO standards when deploying implementations based on GlobalPlatform Specifications. The framework is the result of a collaboration with the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) and is also fully compatible with its recently published INCITS 504-1 standard.
The publication of the ISO Framework is the second step GlobalPlatform has taken to align its internationally recognized industry standards with the needs of governments globally. The organization previously published a specific ID Configuration which brings GlobalPlatform Specifications into line with the cryptographic standard increasingly being stipulated by governments. As a next step, and to further support governments, GlobalPlatform is working on the publication of a Privacy Framework which will assist governments during their Privacy Impact Assessment Process. This document will be published later in the year.
