NFC security will be one of the major talking points of the Black Hat USA 2012 security conference held this week in Las Vegas, reports PC World.
Charlie Miller, computer security researcher with consulting firm Accuvant and Apple hacker of Pwn2Own fame, will present his findings on the security of current NFC implementations to thousands of security enthusiasts and IT professionals gathered at the annual event.
According to the Black Hat website, Miller has discovered that hackers using NFC technologies like Android Beam or NDEF content sharing can make some phones “parse images, videos, contacts, office documents, even open up Web pages in the browser, all without user interaction.”
Furthermore, Miller has found that it is even possible to “completely take over control of the phone via NFC, including stealing photos, contacts, even sending text messages and making phone calls.”
Miller is scheduled to present his findings, titled “Don’t Stand So Close to Me: An Analysis of the NFC Attack Surface,” on Wednesday, July 25.
