The Multnomah County Library, Oregon has installed a new $2.9 million RFID-based system to reduce theft and make handling materials easier in its central library and nineteen branches, according to a local news report.
RFID tags embedded in each item allow several to be cataloged at once, and self check-out kiosks enable patrons to scan a stack of books, CDs and other materials, all at once. The kiosks also allow patrons to renew books, process holds, and pay fines.
The tags also double as a theft deterrent, setting off an alarm if books are removed from the library without being checked out first. Additionally, with the new self check-out system employees are allotted the necessary time to better manage customers and material transfers.
