OSU averages 10 data breaches a year

Ohio State University officials are advising students and faculty to keep their private information safe, following numerous attempted security breaches, reports a campus news source.
IT director for the university, Charles Morrow-Jones, stated that OSU has been tracking data breaches, which average about 10 per year. He added that the majority of these events are either dismissed or classified as minor, but students and faculty should still the proper steps to prevent data exposure.
Most of the time the minor cases are when somebody does not properly dispose of an old computer, or they didn’t erase student confidential information from the machine. Faculty members keep old student rosters on their computers, said Morrow-Jones, Old student lists sometimes include Social Security Numbers, because up until recently the university used these numbers to identify students.
To further prevent data exposures, OSU officials are implementing new security measures. For example, the university will regulate who is coming in and out of the data security center and what they are doing.
