Following a call for biometric voter registration in Zimbabwe by the local political party the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) others, including political commentators and civil society organizations, have joined the push for biometrics prior to the next election in the country, according to an article form The Zimbabwean.
Some of this push is due to the trouble many of the country’s more remote citizens have traveling to register to vote leading to many not registering and not voting.
Biometrics is being seen as a solution to this issue due to the many mobile solutions for registering individuals. Also, such a system would also be capable of eliminating duplicate registrations leading to a more credible and transparent election process.
The motion to adopt the biometric system has been introduced and seconded in the Zimbabwean Parliament and is now awaiting remarks from the Justice Minister before debates are closed.
