The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) will require trucks serving the port to use RFID technology sometime next year, according to Truckinginfo.com.
The agency mandate will require each truck serving the port to be identified through its VIN number and other characteristics to enhance PANYNJ’s ability to identify vehicles that may potentially pose a security risk.
The RFID system will also allow the Port Authority to ensure compliance with its new regional Truck Replacement Program (TRP), which is designed to remove older, more-polluting vehicles from the port complex.
The agency expects the new system to be in place by the second quarter of 2013.
