Penn State University computers were attacked, possibly by so-called cyber criminals, several days before Christmas, putting Social Security numbers of some 30,000 people at risk.
A spokesperson said the school is trying to determine whose Social Security numbers were exposed and would not say whether they belonged to faculty, staff, alumni or others.
“The Social Security numbers were in archived files that people didn’t realize were on their computers,” the spokesperson said.
