The Queensland government is thinking about scaling back its smart card driver license program, reports the Brisbane Times.
The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads is reevaluating partly because the program has cost about A$140 million to roll out and the government has taken on A$88 million in debt, part of which won’t be paid off until June 2037.
The new technology is in 1.3 million licenses, which covers about a third of the potential customer base. The card’s smart chip contains personal information. It’s good for five years, and drivers pay $143.75 for it.
The government is exploring the possibility of adding less information, enabling a smaller chip and thus saving the government money.
