The Australian State of Queensland will start issuing smart card driver license in 2010, according to the Brisbane Times. Citizens will be issued the smart cards after existing license expires.
The chip on the card will store the information that appears on the card as well as digital certificates. One of the certificates will record who access the information on the chip.
Security features on the cards include a photo, signature storage, encryption and a PIN code which the cardholder must enter to allow authorities access to the information stored on the card. Gemalto is supplying the cards for the project.
