REAL ID infographic: REAL ID’s no-fly deadline just one year away
On Oct. 1 2020 an estimated 40% of Americans will not have credentials to board airlines

In 2005 Congress enacted REAL ID to make state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards more secure, and as our REAL ID infographic explains, one year from now – on October 1, 2020 – those without a compliant ID or a valid passport will not be able to fly on commercial airlines. Up to 40% of Americans may not possess a valid credential and thus may be banned from air travel. As the REAL ID infographic shows, the vast majority of states are now in the process of issuing compliant driver’s licenses and ID cards, but many states have only been doing so for a short time. Thus most residents have not received a new REAL ID even though their state DMVs are offering them. To date, only one state has completed the issuance of compliant IDs to its entire population.
