Based on an open architecture, Renesas Technology’s USB Card Reader Platform with a PIN Pad can deliver a cost-effective solution to secure e-commerce and remote banking transactions, the company announced. The Renesas trusted reader platform can provide an off-the-shelf development solution, allowing card reader manufacturers to develop transactional systems with the advanced security at the lowest cost possible.
Renesas Technology Corp., the world’s number-one supplier of microcontrollers (MCUs) and a leader in security IC products, today announced that has unveiled a compact-size trusted reader platform for FINREAD card readers. The enhanced scalable reference design, based on the Renesas ePOS (electronic point-of-sale) platform, complies with the FINREAD (CWA 14174) specifications, a universal standard for the deployment of interoperable and highly secure smart card readers. Renesas is the first semiconductor company to pass the D10 functional tests for the specifications. With this security achievement, the Renesas trusted reader platform provides an off-the-shelf development solution, allowing card reader manufacturers to easily develop transactional systems with the most advanced security available at the lowest cost possible.
The new USB-based card reader platform can easily be connected to PCs and provides a highly secure environment for e-Commerce and home-banking applications. The Renesas platform is ideal for add-on electronic cash register (ECR) readers, PC-connected readers, vending machines, gasoline pumps, medical equipment, access control boxes, and authorization validation devices.
Besides the hardware, the scalable reference design includes software and middleware from strategic partners such as CardSoft, Inc., which complies with various security requirements such as FINREAD, JEFF (from J-Consortium), PCI PED (Payment Card Industry – PIN Entry Device) and Visa PED. This allows terminal manufacturers to bring a wide range of industry-compliant payment products to market faster and with a minimum of risk.
Kenzo Funatsu, director of business development, advanced solutions group at Renesas Technology America, said, “There is a fast growing need for security to protect eCommerce transactions and it’s critical to have the ability to provide an optimal security solution at low cost. The Renesas trusted reader platform is an off-the-shelf hardware/software solution, that enables economical implementations of PIN-pad based trusted readers on diverse types of electronic transaction terminals.”
