ABI Research released a report finding that over the next five years, the cumulative end user market value for government, health care and citizen IDs will reach more than $86 billion.
Governments deployment of national ID cards and e-passports will drive much of this growth, with cumulative shipments of 209 million units in 2011 forecasted to jump to 489 million in 2017.
The report, “Smart Cards in Government and Healthcare Citizen ID,” looks at the market size and main players in this field. NXP leads the IC supply industry with a 43% market share and is poised to gain more points due to the industry’s acceptance of contactless interfaces in higher-end credentials. In the smart card market, the top vendors include Gemalto, Oberthur, Morpho and Eastcompeace.
The report also examines the barriers and drivers of planning and deploying smart card infrastructure, as well as issuing citizen-deployed documents. It analyzes likely future market changes and industry developments.
