Winemakers, cellars and collectors encounter a number of obstacles during the recording of inventory management, including the country and region of origin, varietal information, vintage, alcoholic degree, volume, producer, bottler, importer and wine destination.
ACG Global has made available a wine inventory management system employing RFID technology compliant with EPCglobal standards designed specifically for the wine trade. Know as the Smart Cellar system, the automated solution increases productivity and offers greater visibility over inventory, thereby reducing the manpower requirements.
Wine is often placed in wooden cases for storage and transportation. When unboxed, wine bottles are often stacked horizontally one on top of the other to maximize storage space so the labels are obscured, this makes searching and stock-taking a difficult task. However, with the Smart Cellar system tags can be read through wooden cases and/or with the bottles oriented in any direction.
The system’s functionality can be extended to allow users to locate individual bottles and recover missing bottles. It can also be adapted for use in a wide variety of industries which deal with high value merchandise, such as jewelry and fine art.
