Patrons at Madison Public Library in Huntsville, Alabama now spend less time waiting to checkout books and other items, thanks to an RFID-enabled self checkout system, according to The Huntsville Times.
Four self-checkout stations are located at the front counter, where a touch screen monitor displays check out instructions. Users need only to scan their library card and then place the items on the stations desktop. An RFID antenna, placed in each of the libraries items triggers the system, and checks each out. For confirmation, a receipt is then printed with pertinent information.
Library officials also add that the new equipment also serves as an additional security measure. New, walk-through security gates, stand at the library’s entrance and exit. A buzzer sounds, and lights flash in the gates if anyone walks through with an item that was not checked out.
