SchlumbergerSema today introduced the MagIC X1000 DECT (Digitally Enhances Cordless Telecommunications) portable point-of-sale terminal. The terminal will enable diners to pay their restaurant bill at their table rather than having a waiter take the card away, increasing the chance the card number might be skimmed. “That’s absolutely correct,” says Michel Leger, business manager for the E-Payment Group of SchumberSema North America, which includes the U.S. and Canada. “We are seeing more demand in the U.S. for terminals that enable cardholders to hold onto their cards because of skimming incidents in Florida and newspaper reports about them.” The terminal’s DECT network provides more reliable communication at farther distances between the terminals and their docking station, Leger tells CardLine. A restaurant can install the docking station 100 meters from each terminal, and each docking station supports six terminals. In the U.S., the terminals can accept signature-based card payments, Leger says. In Europe, the terminals accept PIN-based and smart card transactions. MagIC is compliant with Europay/MasterCard/Visa smart card standards. SchlumbergerSema is a subsidiary of Schlumberger Limited.
