Sony has ushered in a brave new world of pay-per-view television payments options, at least for customers in Japan. The electronics giant has introduced an RFID-enabled television that enables the purchase of movies and other entertainment using electronic money.
The new LCD HDTVs, part of Sony’s Bravia line, come in a variety of screen sizes. More importantly, the televisions come with a built-in electronic money card reader. If the television is hooked in to the internet, the viewer can use an electronic money device, card or presumably cell phone, to place an order.
Sony has introduced a similar feature in its PlayStation 3 game consoles. The company did not reveal any plans to market the new devices in Europe or the U.S., where the electronic money concept is not catching on as quickly.
