Starting this summer, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will pilot a system that would enable riders to pay their transit fares with their mobile device or contactless credit and debit card, according to The Toronto Star.
Metrolinx, who is under pressure to launch similar technology in Ottawa, will begin to test the new open payments system at College Station. And if all goes well, the system will be extended to Dunda Station and then Yong-Bloor.
The Toronto transit will get the second generation of Presto readers – an update from those already installed on the GO system, 14 pilot TTC stations and seven other municipal transit services around the city.
Metrolinx hopes to have the system up and running on all TTC vehicles and in stations by the 2015 Pan Am Games.
