RFID Reader: Tracient Sets New Standard For Bluetooth Enabled RFID
7/7/2007
Tracient Technologies has recently launched another trend setting RFID product. Tracient’s new “credit card” sized portable RFID reader, the Explore-R, is an ultra compact device featuring both Bluetooth and USB interfaces. The inclusion of both communication options provides an RFID reader that can be incorporated quickly and easily into business processes that require asset identification, asset tracking, inventory management or service level adherence. RFID technology is a fast growing option for businesses wanting cost effective, time efficient methods for recording the movement of products or assets.
Tracient’s Managing Director, Grant Pugh, says “The device is targeted at both RFID and newer NFC type applications as a result of renewed interest in the HF frequency band from our business partners. For example, one wants to utilize web based software to facilitate customer ordering in restaurants and bars, and another in exhibition venues where they want to use it for attendee tag information collection.”
He says: “The Explore-R’s size, adaptability and low cost mean it is perfect for market testing proposed RFID solutions without the expense or risk of a full RFID capability investment. It is small enough to strap onto the back of your hand or attach to the back of a PDA or phone, which makes it ideal for proof of concept testing. We have many customers from a wide range of industries wanting to leverage off the benefits of RFID technology, the Explore-R now gives them an immediate and cost effective way of doing this.”
The compact size of the reader and its easability mean it can be used in both static and mobile situations. For example, it may be utilized as a counter-top reader for retail item management, it may be mounted on a wall and hard wired for access control or is small enough to be attached snugly to a Bluetooth enabled PDA.
Key features of the Explore-R include: the ability for multiple readers to be connected to one machine (computer or PDA) using Bluetooth, the readers being field software upgradeable, and the option of individual triggered operation or continuous scan modes.
The Explore-R Discovery Kit comes bundled with Tracient’s TraceConnect SDK (Software Development Kit) which contains software applications enabling customers to use the reader immediately in simple situations without the need for developing their own software. For more complex situations Tracient can supply sample source code files which customers can use to modify and develop their own applications.
The Explore-R will be available for shipping in July 2007. For a downloadable datasheet on the Explore-R and a brochure describing Tracient’s current product range, go to www.tracient.com
