Voter ID bill will exclude student ID cards

Texas is preparing new voter ID legislation naming the types of ID cards that will be accepted at the polls. Missing from the bill is a student ID card issued by the state’s colleges and universities.
Five forms of identification were approved in the bill including a driver’s license, state ID card, military ID, concealed handgun license and passport.
The Republican-backed bill must still pass the House, where the GOP holds a 101-49 advantage against Democrats.
As one legislator put it about an amendment that would have allowed the use of student ID cards at the polls: “We have a hundred different institutions in Texas that are government institutions, so you could potentially have a hundred different ID cards.”
