The wooden pallet – sturdy and reusable; ubiquitous to international shipping – has traditionally posed a challenge to RFID tracking technology. Now Finnish firm Confidex Ltd. says it has found a solution with its Confidex Pino RFID tags.
Kevin Donahue, Confidex’s director of business development for North America, said, “The challenge with wood has always been the moisture content because water sucks up RF energy.”
The Pino technology combines a unique antenna and tuning design with a special imbedding process to overcome many of the issues of tracking pallets. Working with European pallet rental organization Logistic Packaging Return (LPR), Confidex has also created a reusable, rewritable information system for the tags. This system may enable the tagged pallets to easily enter the industry’s rental pool, making the technology’s costs more feasible for widespread use.
