Questions surrounding the integrity of health care records loom and with the shift from paper records to electronic, many people are worried that records are not safe and hackers can get in and steal sensitive patient information.
In the recent past, there has been only one fine given out for the mismanagement of records, since the HITECH Act in 2009, which strengthens HIPAA enforcement.
Surveys on the other hand, showed that a third of facilities have been breached within the last year. Auditors also are questioning the integrity of health care records.
Health care records must be protected, but unless something changes, more breaches could occur. Unfortunately HIPAA is not being enforced like it should, and with large government organizations in charge of enforcement, it’s not looking like anytime soon we will have a solution, reports informationweek.com.
